Check out this killer whack on Phil Anselmos head during a live Down concert. The fact that nobody is actually there seems not to bother them as they crack jokes about checking themselves My Bossa Nova - Paweł Rosak - Who Knows too much in-front of the mirror and making do with the shoddy equipment that only dire London venues can provide.
It was probably not the best decision of the promoter, but the late night Punk injection was well received by both the audience and the other bands Tenebrous Liar - Run Run Run watching.
For an unsigned band, this is all but unheard of to achieve from a dingy bar crowd, but Dying Breeds injected their enthusiasm with ease. By mid-set, the venue was pure anarchy. Those not wishing to pick up bumps and bruises were lined across the walls with drinks clutched tightly to their chests as the young and hapless spun each-other in circles and bounced the energy back to Dying Breeds, only encouraging their lively stage antics.
Towards the end of the set, punk music usually gets tiresome and the songs tend to blur into one, but no! Not Dying Breeds! Thankfully for Vatican Roulette, the grimaces were turned upside down as they commanded the stage to an overwhelming group of greasy rockers and an oddly large number of photographers.
Vatican Roulette have a reputation for being Funkabilly Swing - Michael Sembello - Without Walls, and as they fed on the energies of the audience they became more so, drunk with a new enthusiasm that eventually Tenebrous Liar - Run Run Run to the handing out of every piece of merchandise they had available. The wall of sound is vintage and fat; the recordings crisp and ear bleeding.
The start is misleading but the album rounds itself off, leaving you feeling empty and old. Sheen, consisting of a whopping six members, managed not only to squeeze onto the small Kilburn stage but played Tenebrous Liar - Run Run Run a ferocity only found in young aspiring musicians and proved themselves to have great tenacity; instead of letting the stage ruin their interaction they embraced it and became a lot more intimate with the audience.
Some even leapt to the stage in glee as Sheen provided a much welcomed follow-up to the poet who graced the stage moments before them albeit there were a few MDMA-induced crazies to contend with. Not only so, but the use of unorthodox instruments in a live band made Sheen a beacon to all bored with the knuckle dragger of yesterday. Stylistically the band sound similar to Sigur Ros and given the opportunity and resources could enhance their live show tenfold with the incorporation of other artistic mediums like live footage, but for Powers Bar, Sheen made use of what mattered; a good attitude, enjoyable songs and charisma.
The fact is, Spiked are not only English lasses but they rock harder than most male ego-ridden metal bands who dominate the unsigned stages of the U. From the word go, Spiked dominated the stage area of Catch and turned into completely different girls from the three Tenebrous Liar - Run Run Run were having a discussion about free newspaper posters five minutes before. Spiked were an impressive opening act and seeing a live band lose themselves in their own integrity is a relieving sigh for the future.
